He will also be the head coach of the newly formed JV squad. Congrats Coach Mo, we wish you all the success in the world and want to thank you for your time with TTA, you were truly an integral part of our Team and you influenced many…

Thanks to your support, for the 3rd year in a row, Triple Threat Academy has been voted ‘Best Camp’ in the Bay Area by Bay Area Parent Magazine. We were also notified that after winning the award for 3 consecutive years, TTA will be inducted into their Hall of Fame for businesses doing outstanding service! We are excited about the news, but more excited that we get to impact the lives of Bay Area youth and stay true to our mission: Using Basketball as a Vehicle to Teach Life Skills. Thank you again!
Basketball is a team game. By definition, that means all players are involved with the process of playing the game and should function as one. One of the primary skills created to accomplish this is passing. Yet, passing remains one of the most under-taught, under-emphasized, and under-drilled skills in the game. Players assume the values that the coach places on each aspect of the game. When coaching the art of passing, it is important that the coach teach not only the skill, but the mentality as well. Too many players think of passing as something to do when they don’t…

Courtesy of Kevin McCarthy http://norcalbasketball.blogspot.com/2011/04/damian-lillard-videos-must-see.html Damian Lillard came out of Oakland High a few years back and quickly earned Big Sky Conference Freshman of the Year and First Team All Conference honors in his initial season at Weber State. The next season, it was the Big Sky Conference MVP crown. In 2010-2011, a foot injury after participating in just nine games cut short his collection of awards. But in a brilliant move, an idea that originated in the commissioner’s office of the Big Sky Conference, Lillard was given a camera and the “Life With Lillard” (our title) videography series began.…
By Arash Markazi ESPNLosAngeles.com There is a closet inside Brian Shaw’s bedroom that takes him back to a time he wishes would stand still. He finds himself inside the small room every summer in late June, on the floor, touching the remnants of a past he can’t let go. He unzips a garment bag, takes out a shirt his father wore to work, his mother’s favorite coat, his sister’s jumpsuit. He hugs the clothes, brings them up to his face and close to his chest as if he were still hugging and kissing those who once wore them. This wasn’t…

The rule of thumb in basketball is that taller and bigger is more advantageous. However, exceptions always exist. At 5-foot-7 and 145 pounds, 2013 point guard George Johnson Jr. plays with a lot of heart and intensity that does not compare to his current size. Johnson will be a key part of the De La Salle Spartans’ run for a repeat state title appearance in 2012. In addition, he will see more playing time after backing up star guard Amadi Udenyi this past season. Udenyi says about his high potential underclassman teammate, “George and I will be running the back…

Boys player of the year: Aaron Gordon of Mitty (plus video)
Aaron Trains at our San Jose Location Mitch Stephens, Special to The Chronicle At one end, in the WCAL championship game against Serra, Mitty’s 6-foot-7, 215-pound sophomore Aaron Gordon blocked a shot off the backboard and secured the rebound. He dribbled the length of the court, twice changing directions – first going behind his back to go left, then immediately spinning right to avoid two defenders. Gordon was fouled as he approached the free-throw line, but he took one more dribble before floating 7 feet through the air and swishing a finger roll that didn’t even count. It didn’t matter.…

Making lemonade out of lemons is the creed of professional optimists. Attend one of their seminars and mountains are really molehills, obstacles are but opportunities. But you want to bet that none of them grew up in the pleasant climate of Oakland, played college hoops in Mediterranean-like Los Angeles and then faced a perceived basketball exile of sorts to the likes of Siberia — Anchorage, Alaska to be precise. That’s the journey of former Bishop O’Dowd star Brandon Walker and looking back he wouldn’t want it any other way. Here’s his story. Walker reached the precipice of prep participation, scoring…

Bay Area female hoop players were treated to an amazing clinic done by WNBA Washington Mystic’s All-WNBA guard Alana Beard this past weekend in San Ramon. Each 2 hour clinic was structured to mirror one of Alana’s personal workouts! Ball handling and footwork were the emphasis and for 2 hours, the girls didn’t stop. Parents were excited about their daughters getting the opportunity to train with a female pro basketball player– “This was one of the best clinics I’ve ever sent my kids to!  Alana Beard and Triple Threat hit a home run on this one.”
Sue Favor A video of five-year Milan Simone Tuttle dribbling as many as three basketballs simultaneously, at times between her legs, has made the little girl an overnight sensation, the video one of the most-watched on YouTube. No question, this young lady is a prodigy. But she also turns the spotlight on “handles”–a fundamental every player can and should develop. PLUS video and photo gallery. It all started last year, when Renee Tuttle began taking her third-grade daughter Courtland to basketball practice. Little sister Milan, then four years old, came along too, and immediately became fixated on what her older…
Wayne Freedman A rising sports star in San Leandro has been seen around the world because of her skill in basketball. What makes this young person so different, though, is that she’s only in kindergarten. They say that to do well in basketball, a player needs maturity and height, but in Oakland on Wednesday morning, ABC7 found an exception to that rule. “We’ve never seen a kid so young, so focused, with such ability,” said Lou Richie, a basketball coach. By now, you may have seen the YouTube video of Milan Tuttle from San Leandro. Her coach, Lou Richie, put…
Carl Steward IF YOU DOUBT either the power of the Internet or the ability of a young child to win over the world, consider the amazing rise to fame of San Leandro 5-year-old Milan Simone Tuttle. A kindergartner at Oakland’s St. Lawrence O’Toole School, Milan was transformed into a basketball version of Shirley Temple virtually overnight. Her instant stardom has already taken her to some pretty impressive places, but she has even bigger dreams, most notably a one-on-one date with President-elect Barack Obama. “He says he’s going to put a gym in the White House, you know,” she said Wednesday.…

OAKLAND – A tiny 8-year-old boy jump-squats to the left, then the right, in Triple Threat basketball class Monday at 24 Hour Fitness, holding a basketball seemingly larger than his head. When he falters, 6-foot-8 former Cal star Leon Powe of the Boston Celtics gives him a hand. It’s all in a day’s work for San Leandro-based Triple Threat Academy, a basketball school that has trained scores of well-known players, including Powe. Thanks to a new partnership with San Ramon-based 24 Hour Fitness Worldwide, Triple Threat students will train on the fitness chain’s courts from now on. “Gym time is…
Bishop O’Dowd assistant basketball coach Tony Freccero has seen the struggles of inner-city youth all his life. He grew up in San Leandro, played basketball at Bishop O’Dowd and co- directs the Triple Threat Basketball camp in the heart of Oakland. But it took a two-week trip to the Bolar Basketball School in Brazil last summer to face what he called utter poverty and hardship No wooden floors or glass backboards at Bolar. Slick concrete slabs, leaky roofs and bent rusted rims were the allure for these basketball kids, who accepted training with wide, crooked smiles and frail frames.…

Warriors Donate Shoes to Project Shoe Assist The Warriors Donate Shoes to help the underprivileged children of Bolar Basketball School in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil When Dr. James Naismith invented the game of basketball in 1891, he certainly did not benefit from any of the advanced equipment and necessities that currently exist in today’s game. Breakaway rims? No. Fiberglass backboards? Nope. Soft nets? Not exactly. $100 pair of basketball shoes? Never. Fortunately, we’ve come a long way from the days of the peach basket without a hole. Nonetheless, while it is usually not too difficult to locate a decent playing…

Last summer under the leaky roof of a gym in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, Tony Freccero gave the T-shirt he was wearing to the winner of a basketball contest. Freccero was struck by the boy’s enthusiastic reaction: He didn’t complain that it was the wrong size or slightly damp with sweat. The former California State University, Hayward, basketball player and director of Triple Threat Academy in Oakland is returning to Brazil in August. This time he hopes to offer even more to the teenage athletes, many of whom play barefoot or with inadequate shoes. Freccero, a San Leandro resident, launched…
NorCalPreps.com The high school basketball season is over and you are trying to take your basketball game to the next level. You might play club basketball, compete in spring and summer leagues or open runs at the local park or gym, all of which will help you get better as a player as basketball is a game of repetition. Many high school basketball players also hire the services of basketball trainers who use organized workouts and basketball instruction to improve players’ skills. “Skill development is important, because you have a lot of guys playing who do not have any fundamentals,”…
1st String Magazine It is amazing what effect being out of shape can have on somebody. Fours years ago Lou Richie, former D1 player at both UCLA and Clemson, was now out of shape and he did not want to fall into that familiar trap of not playing as much since he was now older and falling hopeless out of shape. To do something about it Lou started going to the gym and working out by himself . I started working out four years ago when I realized how out of shape I was. I was not playing basketball…
Mitch Stephens It’s nice to see a high school coach — in this case, former Richmond boys basketball coach Ken Carter — being recognized on the silver screen. Samuel L. Jackson stars as “Coach Carter,” an inspirational tale that premieres Friday nationwide. Here are a just a few real-life examples of current inner-city East Bay boys basketball coaches making a big difference: * Hodari McGavock (Oakland Tech): For 24 seasons, McGavock has given much more than 455 wins and two Northern California Division I championships. A calm, Zen-like personality, a cool head, McGavock is much more concerned with building families…
Bishop O’Dowd assistant coach takes knowledge of basketball to Brazil
By Phil Jensen It’s a small world when basketball is concerned. That’s what Tony Freccero has learned. Freccero, an assistant coach for the Bishop O’Dowd High School boys team, held a two-day clinic for Brazilian boys earlier this summer in Rio de Janeiro. “I know it sounds like a cliche, but basketball is its own language,” the 26-year-old Freccero said. “I learned that you don’t need to talk to teach basketball.” On a previous trip to Brazil to see his then-girlfriend, Freccero met Rogerio Werneck, who has a basketball school in Rio de Janeiro. Freccero started working with Brazilian youths…
Tony Freccero brings passion for hoops to South America’s gifted athletes Athan Bezaitis, Special to the San Francisco Chronicle “I’m here to coach basketball,” Tony Freccero kept reminding himself as he looked out the windows of the subway train taking him deep into a Rio de Janeiro favela. Outside, he saw what appeared to be a cardboard city. People crowded into open shacks that looked as if whoever was building them never finished. The poverty was a hundred times worse than in any slum he’d ever seen in the United States. He stood out as an American and knew he…
www.basket-ball.com by Erik Woods Jorge sits watching his favorite NBA hero on an antiquated t.v, his makeshift shanty house of plastic and plywood situated on the green hills of Rio de Janeiro is not beaming in images of Micheal Jordan or any other American stars into his 10 X 15 feet living room where he shouts “Vive Nene, Vive Nene.” Jorge says in his broken English, “who needs American stars when we have Nene Hilario of Nuggets, he is the man” It’s hard to argue with this 13 year old Jorge (pronounced Gor-gee), “No all the boys need to be…
NorCalPreps.com by- Jason Green Often, the best locations are right in your backyard. When it comes to skill training and personal development through basketball for kids ages 7-14, Tony Freccero and his Triple Threat Academy provide the optimal experience. Recently arrived home from a major trip to Brazil, we caught up with Tony to find out more about his clinics, training philosophies, and future events. Tony Freccero loves basketball just like most other coaches who spend almost all their time working with kids in a gym. The only difference is location since Freccero will travel anywhere to help any kid,…

San Leandro Times Kids find fun during Christmas break; flock to basketball camp Jim Knowles A wave of kids ran across the gym floor, yelling their heads off. But nobody told the boisterous bunch to be quiet. In fact, the coach told them to make more noise. They weren’t loud enough. So the kids did it again and really went wild, winning the approval of coach Tony Freccero. Freccero, believe it or not, really wants to teach kids the fundamentals of basketball, but that doesn’t mean the lessons have to be boring. “You have to keep the kids motivated and…
What people are saying
Will talks about the five great coaches he has. He really loves coming to your practices. He struggles as a player with his own team but when he gets to your practices, it makes it all better because he gets to play, learn and really enjoy basketball. We just want to thank the staff for the guidance and more importantly, the coaching style that you provide the kids at Triple Threat. It’s Will’s second home when it comes to basketball.
